Classic sudoku speed

I want to echo Paul’s request for ideas on getting faster at classic sudoku. Similarly, when I have extra constraints, I get faster. I think I must be missing some key classic techniques.

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

Morning, just a quick message to say that the Puzzle GP for round 6 has been moved to the weekend of 19th/20th June, if you need to adjust your diaries.

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

Hello everyone. A mixed bag in Round 5 as the UK's best did very well but many of us struggled to get into some of the puzzles, especially the higher scorers. Division A: Freddie Hand - 805 points Neil Zussman - 699 points Tom Collyer - 473 points Adam Bissett - 338 points Matthew White - 280 points...

Re: Division C 2020-2021

Division C is complete and Eva has won the inaugural title, ahead of a very close pack. There were some impressive performances in the Masyu contest. Maurice Blount - 500 points - 62m34 Jeffery Dick - 500 points - 73m41 Thomas Powell - 440 points - 70m19 Eva Myers - 425 points - 83m32 Liane Robinson...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Any ideas for Hiroimono for this weekend's Puzzle GP? I'm struggling to see good techniques and there's six of this type!

Re: Puzzle Duel Anniversary Contest

I liked today. It was nice to see some familiar names. Frustrating that the last two seemed just out of reach for me in the 5 minutes, but good fun nonetheless.

Re: Division C 2020-2021

Round 5 is now finished. Thanks to Neil Zussman and David McNeill for testing. It turns out that a couple of the puzzles were harder than I was expecting. I hope you enjoyed them. Congratulations to Maurice on a fine victory, with especially fast times with the Four Winds, notably puzzle 10, which w...

Re: Division C 2020-2021

You don’t need to time how long it takes to find the answer key. You can stop the clock once the puzzle is done, before finding the answer key.

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

Round 4 is complete. Some excellent work by the UK in general resulted in a familiar looking top of both leaderboards, but Division B also had their fourth different second place finished. Division A: Freddie Hand - 132.07 points Neil Zussman - 117.63 points Adam Bissett - 55.4 points Matthew White ...

Well done Freddie. I doubt it will be one of your more memorable victories! I suspect this will be quite good second time around. A bit frustrating this time.

Turing Challenge

Should we have had a thread on this while it was fashionable? I feel like I'm a bit surprised there was no chat on it here while I must have been shared the link about 5 times last weekend. I really enjoyed it.

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

Thanks everyone for trying this new format. I think I agree with Neil, especially when you see the combined table, that using second place as the benchmark probably isn't right for future years but it's given a decent result this year. http://fuchsia.parallelepiped.co.uk/PuzzleDuel2021Final.png And ...

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

I’ve just realised that if David beats Freddie’s time by enough he would increase everyone else’s point sufficiently that he could catch up, so it’s still worth a go!

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

I should have completed through to today (which I think was the last one), sorry for getting a little behind. I've enjoyed the way you've set this round up Adam - I do obviously enjoy the 'sit and puzzle for 90 minutes' format for GP/LMI but its nice to have a round that's a bit different Thanks Ma...

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

There's worse in Division A, Emma. It's easy to have a bit of a nightmare here, I think. Friday's maxiloop really threw me through a loop! Division A is all over bar the shouting, as it doesn't matter what David scores on today's MaxiLoop, the positions are fixed. The missing puzzles in Division B w...

Division A is reasonably close for positions 3 to 6, though the couple of high scores early in the week for David and Neil show how precarious this round can be.

Division B is a bit more spread out, but it can all change very quickly.

I thought Tuesday's one was going well but then I broke something and had to restart, but it looks like a few of us have been brought down with the odd puzzle. Some incredibly close times in both divisions so far.
