Hear, hear - super to see them both sitting comfortably in the top ten - but kudos to David, Tom and plenty of others too. My 'strategy' of just solving puzzles I could do without really caring about their relative value looked a bit forlorn, when 21 correct solutions turned out to be worth less than 40%.

Really enjoyed the easy-ness of some of those puzzles, after the horror of struggling with the LMI marathon over the weekend. Didn't expect to be so high though, chuffed with that, and congrats to James as well. In fact nearly all the UK solvers had their best result on this one, compared to the previous 2, so well done everyone!

And with David, Tom, Steve, Emma all in the top 20%, I'd say that was a good round for the UK.

I didn't really look at the points distributions either, but I think in retrospect this was one of those where doing the big pointers first and then mopping up any of the easier ones as a bonus was the optimal strategy - it usually is in most competitions to be honest as long as you don't get too bogged down. Although that's usually not as much fun! But yeah, terrific stuff from James and Neil, congratulations guys

Curious what happened to Neil though - much as I'd like to think that I beat him fair and square, I presume that his computer exploded or something

Thanks Alan, it was an enjoyable set of puzzles for me.

I'm also curious about Neil's No Good Very Bad Day, perhaps that large Cave took all his loving attention but gave nothing back?
Anyway, it was surely just a temporary glitch and he'll be back with a vengeance next month!

Congrats James, great performance.

Since people asked, I should say that anyone who beat me, beat me fair and square, I can't complain. I'm allowed to have off days.

I did solve the 54-point cave, but I solved it by guessing, and then misentered the answer key because I forgot my own notation.

But that just summed my performance up really, I was just very slow and made some silly errors. E.g. on the 79-point cave, I was convinced it was impossible because I convinced myself the cave had to go straight through the 3 in the top left (i.e. either horizontally or vertically). So in a nutshell, I was a bit rubbish on everything, but I guess it's good to get it all out at once.

Darn, darn, darn.

Took my eye off the clock, and submitted 291 points-worth 2 minutes after time.

At least I was enjoying them, so it wasn't a complete waste of 90 minutes.

I had printer problems for some reason with this one - it only printed the first few pages out, sent to the other printer - that did similar, so finished up printing odd ones at a time.
Finished a 30+ pointer with only a couple of seconds spare so no time to submit the answer.

I lost a top 100 place by getting my "X" and "O" the wrong way round on the snake puzzles - losing 56 points - ah well.

Quite pleased with that one given that it contained a whole bunch of my less favourite puzzles. Curious though - did anyone else find the opening Japanese Sums harder than the closing ones?

Yes - I was completely stumped by it in the competition, but the others seemed easier.

(If my answers were correct, that would have been a top-70 place I threw away. Bah!)

I got quickly stuck on the first Japanese Sums, so was forced to guess (that the bottom left cell was a digit). The others I found logical. My times for them were 3:20, 3:09, 4:21, 8:21.

@Liane, I argued with Wei-Hwa about those answer keys in last years GP5 too. I'm sure most people would think X=black, O=white. At that time he modified the instruction book to allow both options for 3 of the puzzles. Looking at the results table today though, I believe you (and AJ) have been awarded full points for your Snakes, so you're both in the top 100 now, yay!

And well done also to David, with an impressive 23rd, you're getting some great results this year.

Well done all round. I wonder how many used the "clue" for the galaxies? I certainly didn't - I had a quick glance at the puzzle types, then got stuck in as time was against me.

The final round (8) is this weekend, by the Japanese authors.

The hardest type is Consecutive Kakuro, which Thomas Snyder wrote about 4 years ago.

While we wait for the results to round 8, did anyone else find the points allocation a bit... strange. The two Kakuro's weren't that bad, imho, and I'm no Kakuro expert. Maybe with more experience of the puzzle I'd have knocked off the Japanese Arrows with less difficulty but as it was, I didn't really see a way into these, even the easy one (which I've since done). Not that I'm complaining that the big puzzles that I could do had the highest points, of course... (waits to discover I didn't actually get them right...)
