A Gogen Puzzle I Created Myself

Post by Andrew Reid » Sun 05 Jul, 2020 10:22 am

For those of you who have never done a Gogen puzzle, I created this one.
If it takes you much more than 10 or 20 minutes, you are probably doing it wrong:

Thank you.

I like Gogen. I’m a little surprised I’ve never seen it in a puzzling event.

I believe you don't see them in many places because, unlike sudoku and similar puzzles, they are not easy to produce by computer. I first saw them in the London Evening Standard. I did some programming last year to help me create them but, even so, each one takes a couple of hours or so to set up.

I'm not sure that this is a valid argument because puzzling events are almost exclusively hand-crafted. And besides there are plenty of puzzle genres in which I have basically never seen a computer-generated puzzle.

I've seen a few versions, under different names. There've been a few optimisers (how many of these words can you fit inside this grid), and it was in the WPC maybe 6 years ago.

I can't see why they would be hard to computer generate anyway, and the newspaper ones presumably are. Its easy to make a random solution grid and then you just need a simple brute force solver to allow you to remove given letters to the limit of uniqueness, or test for uniqueness with a fixed given pattern.

You can of course also make them without actual words, as for example in this one with just a single clue:

Lots of computer-generated ones on this site: http://www.puzzles.grosse.is-a-geek.com ... gen6b.html
