Re: Board sofware update

Thanks James. That's fixed.
Anywhere that accesses php '$_' variables (GET/POST/REQUEST/etc) are now throwing errors since the server upgrade.

I need to systematically go through all scripts replacing all references. In the meantime, report here anything that can't wait. Ta.

Re: Board sofware update

I've restored clicking the logo as a return link to the main website. As you say, not a perfect solution. There doesn't appear to be any other standard configuration to modify the header banner. However, it is possible to fully customise the header banner by getting stuck into the /prosilver/templat...

Board sofware update

I'd been putting this off for some time, but was forced into action yesterday when our hosts upgraded their PHP version to 7.0x, which was not supported by the current version of phpBB. Anyway, as you can see, the forum is working, as is most(?) of the rest of the website. I'm aware of a couple of p...

Re: The Times Sudoku Championship 2017

Well done Tom, and everyone else who made (or should have made) the final! Nice write-up too.

I hope that some of the unrecognised names you mention become familiar faces in these quarters over the next few years.

Re: Bot registrations

The bot filtering seems to be working. We've not had a rogue account activated in a long time. However, we have had lots of attempted registration, which I just need to clear out. (c.20-30 per day!) Anyway, I've upped the game, using the API available at https://stopforumspam.com/usage Since doing t...

Welcome Angus! (I can't help but sense some Scottish connections in your name...) There are a few other talented cruciverbalists among our number here, that have happily taken the step into the wonderful world of puzzling, so you are in good company. I hope you enjoy what you find here. My advice is...

Re: Puzzle GP question

Re round 8, I only did 'C', which (by the way) you guys really shouldn't overlook... I can't remember the last time I made so many mistakes in one competition - 4/19 answers with an error! However, the contest was heavily loaded on the last 2 puzzles. I would have scored more by simply solving those...

Coincidentally, I've solved a lot of clouds puzzles recently. I have an app called 'logic games' on my phone (logo is 2 grey cogs). "Free on iOS, Android and WP" by Andrea Sabbatini. There are dozens of familiar puzzle types you can practice, including Clouds... Anyway, that doesn't help if you don'...

Puzzle GP round 7

On this weekend, but you should have had an email if you've competed in any previous round... (here)

Anyway, booklet C, "C16-17 Uncounted Skyscrapers". Anyone got any ideas how to solve these?

Re: Play-offs

I once asked Ulrich what he thought of the playoffs. He said he didn't mind - At least it gave someone else a chance to be champion. Seriously though, 2-3 days of puzzling should clearly indicate who is 'best' overall, and the 'playoffs' make a bit of a mockery of the whole event. It might be justif...

Re: New Zealand puzzle team

As I said in a speech once (if anyone was listening), most people do not attend the WPC with any expectation of winning. They attend because it is a gathering of like-minded people, and is a very enjoyable experience. Anyone who has been to a WPC will testify this. (Not sure if the WSC is in the sam...

Re: Bot registrations

Well, that was a disaster. Having to delete around 50 bot registrations and numerous spam posts every day. It should be much better now. I've added an extra (mathematical calculation) question to the registration screen. Every time the bots find a way round it, I'll change the question. Normal self-...

I'm about to plug the UKPC somewhere fairly soon. Is self-registration available again now, please, for those who might want to take part for the first time this year? Great. I have re-enabled self-authorising registration now. It's been on admin approval recently, and I have been checking for regi...

Re: How'd we get puzzles at the Olympics, or something like

In sport, the money brought into the game is roughly proportional to the spectator interest. (both in person, and via media views) This is a self-fuelling cycle, as more money means a better show can be put on. I've seen a few things become popular on this basis, often with Red Bull associated with ...

Re: Bot registrations

You'll notice an 'odd question' when you register here. Someone has recorded this oddity that occurs during registration here, and now who/whatever is clicking the right option. We get 100s of attempts every day. 99% don't pass. Right now, all new registrations are on 'admin approval'. Easy to ignor...

Bot registrations

The site is being hammered with rogue registrations, and spam posts, so I've turned off self-registration. For the foreseeable time, all new accounts must be admin approved. Therefore, if you register a new account, you must email me (chairman@ this site's domain name) to request account activation....

Re: possibly the hardest puzzle you will ever see

A little more information is required to define the challenge, and explain what everything in the grid represents.
Unless the puzzle is to figure out the puzzle, in which case, not interested.
